Adams-Friendship Area School District has been my home since 2004. I began my career here as Special Education Teacher at the high school. In 2010 I became the Principal and Special Education Teacher at Roche-A-Cri Elementary where I stayed until I was relocated to AFE in 2017 to be the Principal. I have 2 children who are currently attending schools in the AFASD. My family loves to hunt, fish, and when we aren’t outdoors doing that I am sitting in bleachers watching my children play their many sports.
Adams-Friendship Elementary is not just a place to learn academics it is also a place to learn problem solving skills when things don’t go our way, social etiquette and choice making. AFE teachers take time daily to work with their students on Positive Action, which teaches students how to handle various situations and that everything can be resolved positively and when we feel good about ourselves we are much more likely to make more positive choices. There is always a way to manage ourselves without yelling, swearing or leaving the classroom and disrupting the learning of others.
Of course, we want to not only improve student behavior but academic skills as well. AFE has reading and math interventionists to help with students who struggle significantly in both of these areas. They work with students everyday and students progress is monitored weekly. Teachers are constantly assessing their students to see what needs to be retaught or touched upon. Our teachers are able to meet with our interventionists and talk about data and ask for support in implementing new strategies to help with student engagement, time on task and activities.
We would love for parents to help support teachers at home with positive behavior choices and working reading, writing and math every night. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at irey_r@afasd.net or 339-3016.
